Deruta Galletto Blue 9.5″ Dinner Plate

This ceramic plate was handcrafted and painted by the artists of Labor Deruta, located in Deruta, Umbria, Italy. Like all our Deruta dinnerware, these plates are dishwasher safe. The Galletto pattern is a modified version of ceramic originating from the Umbrian town of Orvieto in the 13th century.

In the 19th century, centuries after Deruta had become the center of Umbrian ceramics, a rooster was added to the pattern. The leaves were also modernized. As well as being a lovely addition to the pattern, the rooster is said to bring good fortune to the home because of a legend about the Medici family in the 15th century in which crowing roosters alerted Giuliano de Medici about approaching hired assassins.
