Ceramiche di Sicilia 22” Round Serving/Wall Platter with the Vucciria Market of Palermo

This large platter was hand painted in Baucina, a small town outside Palermo, Sicily, Italy. The art of the famed artisan De Simone inspired this beautiful artwork. There is so much happening here! Every time we look at this platter, we see a new detail. If you have ever seen a market in a big Italian city, this scene will be very familiar to you, with people bustling and the vibrant colors of the produce. Il mercato di Vucciria is is one of the most visited markets in all of Italy. The word vucciria translates to “hubbub” or “voices,” giving the market the perfect name. The market is indeed part of Sicilian culture, there is even a saying in Sicily: “Quannu s’asciucanu i balati dà Vucciria,” which means, ‘when the streets of the Vucciria run dry.” It is an idiom for “not in this lifetime,” much like “When pigs fly” in English. At 22 inches in diameter, this is a large platter that can be used for serving and is wired to hang as wall decor.
