The Galletto pattern is a modified version of green and white ceramics that came out of the Umbrian town of Orvieto in the 13th century. The original Galletto pattern was green and white in color, like these Rooster Pitchers. The rooster is said to bring good fortune to the home because of a legend of the Medici family in the 15th century in which crowing roosters alerted Giuliano de Medici about the approach of hired assassins. Each ceramic rooster, or chicken, pitcher was handcrafted and painted by the artisans Labor Deruta of Deruta, Umbria, Italy. The image of the rooster is not featured on the rooster pitchers.
