Set in the mountains of Umbria, this ancient Roman town has been famous for its ceramics for hundreds of years. Saint Francis tamed the wolf here, and in the fourth century, Irish monks drained a lake just outside the walls of the town. It was known for its metallic sheen lustrewares in the Renaissance. Examples of which are mother of pearl (madreperla), and the most famous, ruby lustreware - which was crimson. Created in the early sixteenth century by Maestro Giorgio, these glaze techniques have been lost during the ensuing centuries. Presently in Gubbio, artisans are searching to recreate new stable lustre glazes. Gubbio still holds a reputation for craftsmanship and ingenuity.
